7/29/2012: Justin's Got Soft, He's In Love 45
SUNDAY, JULY 29th, 2012: After we took a week off (the property owner was not feeling well and we all decided it was going to be better to take a week off for her sake), the racing resumed at Galletta's Speedway for our Annual HarBOREfest Championship. And Softy McSoft Pants Justin Galletta (formerly known as Justin "Hard As F***" Beiber "The Credit Carder" Galletta) couldn't make it because he's in love, so we named the race after him in a loving tribute. And what a race it was, with lots of passing and action. But damn it all... that crafty Matty-Joey Stevens did it again. He just wins, and wins often. Yeah, Matt, you are already the all-time leader in feature wins in all of Oswego County, you don't have to rub it in. Anyways, Mighty Matt, posing here with his wife Melissa, flexed for you all to let you know that you can't beat him. Yaawwwnn... As for the race, here is MORE...

HEAT #1:
|
Matt Stevens came out of nowhere to get a fast (and untouchable for most of the heat) Billy Ruggio on the finish line by and inch for the heat 1 win. Tim Galletta and the returning Fearlessly Fast Flippin' Freddy Collins were credited with Retcon Make-up Race points as well. Retcon races count towards last place in the earliest race of each year that you missed. For example - for Fred, it was the opener; for Tim, it was last week's race. They can be run during heats, B-Mains, or their own seperate race as long as they are scored accordingly.
|
HEAT #2:
|
Eric Woolworth picked up his first heat victory in the Galletta's #1 by holding off Chris Stevens. Four drivers also recorded retcon points in the heat.
|
THE FEATURE (45-LAPS/11-KARTS):
The track was dry and rough, so we took a small intermission after the heat to water and repair, but full track repairs will not occur until during the week, meaning the track should be amazing next weekend, but a little rough as the race goes on. Remember, this track is almost entirely hand-constructed by Matt Stevens with occasional help from his brother and co-racers, so do try to schedule track work during the week to help get it ready for next week's race. In the meantime... a bumpy feature awaits....
|
Again, Bill Ruggio was a rocket in the Ruggio #02 (formerly the Nick Dann #02/68 and AJ Nason #35; and the original builder - Dick Dann - was here to watch the race and help flag a corner), in search of his first career feature win. But, again, Billy spun out all by himself with roughly a straightaway lead! If Billy could keep the kart straight, he should be able to win a feature very soon. This set up a fast Joe Sereno in the lead, seeking his second career win, provided that he would not test out the new Joseph Sereno Memorial Catch Fence in turn one!
But Joe did not get the chance to test the catch fence, as the clutch burned out while in the lead. What the heck, will you ever win again, Joe!? This put... wait... what Matt's in the lead? Again?! Okay, this is getting kinda' boring.
Chris Stevens was again trying out his 2-WD former road course chassis (rebuilt into a 1-WD Galleta-type kart), and it handles outstanding in the turns, but in the straights it lacked punch. Chris' only hope to get Matt was on restarts, and he pulled along side him a handful of times, but Matt took off once they hit the back stretch. Matt's motor was puffing out smoke, despite being a relatively new motor that Matt has finely tuned, which had him worried, and others thinking he was vulnerable.
.
Entertaining wreck here, as Ruggio made his way back up therough the field and passed Chris Stevens for 2nd, he spun out, and then was hit backwards by Brian Galletta, who was absolutely flying in his brand-new motor that was just recently purchased and arrived and built during the week. It appears even faster than the Galletta's rental motor that he won with last weekend.
Brian then blew by Chris and hunted Matt down like a dog. He even plowed into an unsuspecting Matt on one lap. However, as seen here, his left-front rim broke clean off and it ended Brain's night before he could challenge Matt for more than a lap or two. The tire bounced off a greenhouse, Chris arm, and then into the oods in the back stretch.
Close shot of the racers shortly before the final lap. The order was to be the same minus Melissa Stevens spinning out in the final corner to lose a spot to David Spanfelner. And the race finished as follows...

Location & Sponsor
Galletta's Backyard Go-Kart Speedway is a free-to-race-on and free-to-watch 0.133887 mile dirt oval with 20-degree banked turns. It is located behind Galletta's Greenhouse in Oswego, NY, and can be seen from outer space! The single-wheel-drive gasoline-fueled flathead motor karts take the track between 15-17 seconds per lap which averages over 30 mph (approximately 45-50 mph top speed in the straights). Our speeds are comparable to alcohol/methanol-fueled karts that cost 8 times as much because we use mostly homemade or rebuilt go-karts and gas on a large track; leading to more karts, more competition, and more fun. Our class is usually the largest and most competitive in the area. Thanks to Google Earth for this Spring 2006 photo. Our karting club's home track is located in back of:
