6/10/2012: 17th Annual Season Opener
SUNDAY, JUNE 10TH, 2012: As most of our fans, followers and racers know, our season usually starts the first Sunday in June annually. For 17 years, this has been the case, as the founders of the club, Matt and Chris Stevens - work at Galletta's Greenhouse and can't get the karts and track ready until then. Even then, it is reeeaaallly pushing it, and things are always rushed. However, our original date of Sunday, June 3rd, 2012 was rained out (technically, it rained too much on Friday and Saturday for the track to dry out suitably despite a nice day). Then, we hit several snags that delayed us further today. Here is the story....

ROOKIE QUALIFIER RACE:
No less than FIVE 1st-time rookies were on hand for the opener, and all rooks need orientation in a race to themselves in order to get the hang of things and prove they won't be a hazard if they join up with the veterans for the regular races. Two are new owners to familiar karts - Adam Lytle purchased the former Gary Miller #24 and renumbered it the #33c. Bill Ruggio purchased the former Nick Dann #68/AJ Nason #35 and renumbered it #02 (full circle, as it was once the Nick Dann #02 in 2006). The newbies impressed us and all qualified by running a relatively smooth qualifier, with only a few spins and minor mishaps. (Pictures by Eric Sereno)

SEASON OPENING FEATURE 45 - PART 1 (6/10/2012):
|
Lots of delays slowed up the event, which saw Joe Sereno pass Brian Galletta in the opening laps, as Brian lost a tie-rod in turn two while leading. Founding brothers Matt and Chris Stevens both looked VEERRRYYY strong, as on restarts the both of them were picking off competitors left and right. With their brand new motors they purchased late last year on the #3 and #8, It was basically whoever got to the front between Chris and Matt was likely going to run away with it. Matt in particular started challenging Joe Sereno for the lead, and just as Chris moved into third, Matt did shoot under Joe and took off. Chris eventually started hunting him down, as the two were very close in speed. (Pic by Eric Sereno)
However, we did have several restarts due to the rookies banging and crashing. This delayed the action to dark, and our intention was to finish before sunset because we had been so busy with work that we didn't get all of the lights set up. By lap 20 of 45, we hit 10pm, and two events brought out the caution - first, Matt Stevens sputtered in the back stretch enabling Chris Stevens to shoot by his lil' bro for the lead. Then, a few moments later, Bill Ruggio blew a tire and drivechain. Matt was going to bring out his #33 if we continued, but the rookies had to leave and the remaining veterans agreed to either postpone the race or call it at twenty. The problem being, the last completed lap was led by Matt in the #3 who sputtered and stalled (later determined to be that he RAN OUT OF GAS - showing how unselfish Matt is most of the time, he filled gas in most of the other karts and forgot to fill how own's tank!) seconds before the caution flew when the Ruggio #02 broke, and if we continued, Matt would've been sent to the rear with his #33 kart (and the -5 pt. mid-race kart change penalty). Chris was set to start in the lead if the race continued, but Matt still claimed he was either the leader or 2nd place. After sleeping on it, the decision was made to postpone the final 25 laps for next weekend, resuming with the race as ended on lap 20. All competitors will be allowed back in their spots, and new drivers can also run in the race, although they will be 21-laps down at the start. (Pic by Eric Sereno)

The race shall resume in the above order. Also, points have not been tallied yet, but heat wins have in the...

SEASON OPENING FEATURE 45 - PART 2 (6/17/2012):
The final 24 laps of the race resumed on 6/17/2012 as a prelude before the Father's Day 45. Chris Stevens led for 13 laps and was taking it relatvely easy until Matt Stevens caught him sleeping and passed Chris via a slingshot pass.
Chris then hounded Matt and bumped his little brother a handful of times, and even almost got him back on a restart - but Matt in the lead on this track is too tough to beat without traffic or a mechanical failure. He steals the win back from his brother, one that Chris nearly stole when Matt ran out of gas last weekend before postponement of the race!

Galletta's Backyard Go-Kart Speedway is a free-to-race-on and free-to-watch 0.133887 mile dirt oval with 20-degree banked turns. It is located behind Galletta's Greenhouse in Oswego, NY, and can be seen from outer space! The single-wheel-drive gasoline-fueled flathead motor karts take the track between 15-17 seconds per lap which averages over 30 mph (approximately 45-50 mph top speed in the straights). Our speeds are comparable to alcohol/methanol-fueled karts that cost 8 times as much because we use mostly homemade or rebuilt go-karts and gas on a large track; leading to more karts, more competition, and more fun. Our class is usually the largest and most competitive in the area. Thanks to Google Earth for this Spring 2006 photo. Our karting club's home track is located in back of:
