Galletta's Greenhouse Karting Club, located in Oswego, NY, is a go-kart racing club that specializes on racing as professionally as we can for as economically as possible. In the early 1990s, we developed a style of kart racing that is different, but no less competitive than any national karting organization. Our biggest difference is affordability. Our club is free to join and race in, and the only thing anybody pays for is gas and parts. We are the largest and longest-running dirt karting class in the local area, as we were founded in the early 1990s and our average feature is 45-Laps usually consisting of 10-15 karts, with a 200-Lap "Klassic" Championship at Summer's end deciding an Annual Points Champion. We race homemade 1-Wheel-Drive racing karts that can race on professional karting tracks and backyard speedways alike. We have karts rebuilt from used racing chassis, used yard karts and some built from scratch. We have ONE class to ensure a true overall track champion, and not have several smaller classes of divisional champions with no clear winner. We race used 5hp Briggs Flathead motors fueled by pump gas, sped-up by hand-shaved heads and select racing cams, and regulated by stock Fun Power-type carburetors instead of expensive prefabricated 2-WD chassis powered by high-priced methanol-fueled motors. On our own backyard oval speedway, we turn clockwise with our top speeds approximately 45-50MPH. Although we all run in the same division, in addition to a minimum weight requirement, we have something unique to our inclusive class -- a weight-to-power-allowance scale to allow heavier drivers more horsepower via stronger racing cams and more powerful gear ratios, a system proven to be successful as we have the tightest competition and most varied winner's circle locally over the last few years. This way our one class is bigger than the higher-priced karting classes, because heavier and lighter drivers can race equally and having the same chance of winning as the next guy. Racing experience, starting position, and a little bit of luck usually decides the outcome, and money and kart price play no role. To ensure this, we have an expert motor builder -- club co-founder Matt Stevens - who oversees that all of the motors are legal, equalized, and competitive, and does so for no cost - just to have people to race with! Join us and find out what many people, including semi-pro drivers from local racetracks say - we have the most fun and spend the least money of likely any competitive motorsport class in the world! The club races every Sunday afternoon all summer starting on the first Sunday in June annually in back of Galletta's Greenhouse and running every weekend until the weather stops us in the Fall. We race qualifiers and a 45-Lap feature most weeks, but change up to occasional Twin-30s or the occasional 55-Lapper. All races count for points and are tallied at the end of each season to determine the track champion. The season concludes with the 200-Lap Galletta's Karting Klassic in late-September or early-October. Our club is free to watch and free to join, and runs 100% off donations of the racers. You can race a Galletta's Team Kart for a nominal gas & parts donation, or race your own. We will help you either way, whether it be using a Galletta-kart or building one for yourself. We're not in this to make money and we're not in it to further a career in racing. We are in this to have fun racing with friends and family and be mini-superstars on our lil' website for as little money as humanly possible. And can your $1,000-$7,000 methanol racing kart go over 20 miles reaching speeds between 30-50MPH per lap in one race on one tank of pump gas? No? Well, we can. Join us! Enjoy the site!

8/13/2012: "Awww Yeah, Son" - Raindate Twin-30s

MONDAY, AUGUST 13th, 2012: Sunday saw, for the second week in a row, a monsoon-like downpour turn turn 2 into a small lake--but this time DURING the race--and again was postponed for Monday. The first feature saw Randy Platt break in the lead which set up Chris and Matt Stevens battling for the win (with Chris getting him by a wheel). The 2nd feature saw Randy Platt extract sweet revenge on all with a win, but not before his "hip bar" broke (the left side of our seats, which is essentially what you ride in a 1-WD Galletta-kart) which led to an exciting close race! The race was originally scheduled to be a 30-Lap feature, but with a potential rainshower on the horizon, we had to be open to a potential rain-out.

Randy Platt worked his way through the filed into the lead; having to chase down a very fast Billy Ruggio early.

But after lap 10 was completed, the rain came. Hard. Rapid Randy Platt, with Matt and Chris on his tail before the yellow flew, were directed into the pits by starter Wesley James TrOgre Stevens to wait and see if it'd let up. But it didn't. The race was then postponed for the next day, Monday the 13th.

8/13/2012: 30-LAP FEATURE #1 (12-Karts):

Except when Monday came - this time with Joe Sereno but without Bill Ruggio and Adam Lytle (who both could not make it) - everybody in attendence unanimously voted to turn the10-lap race into a finalized heat and then start an all-new race (with Bill and Adam already qualified into the event and scored in it, but unable to start).

All year the racing has been excellent, and this again was no exception. But AGAIN... Randy Platt dispatched a few 1st-year drivers to take a convincing lead. And again Chris and Matt Stevens followed him shortly thereafter. But while in the lead, the #187's brake broke, and needed repairs to continue. Platt then hopped into the Galletta's #2 (and even took a ride into Rungnapha "Aou"'s garden - see victory pic). This put the club's founding brothers (and the two most experienced karters in Oswego County racing for twenty years now) in the lead for another of their famous battles. Matt pulled alongsside his brother several times, and a few laps came close to being ties!

But Chris held him off. Not by much, as we see an excellent closeup of the finish - the #4 getting the #3 by a kart nose.

8/13/2012: 30-LAP FEATURE #2 (12-Karts):

Man, we've been having a LOT of Twin-30s this season. Everybody loves them, especially since it seems that we get a far more varied winners list, and longer races tend to favor the little tricky master-of-the-low-groove-passer Matt. Let's see if that trend continues, no?

Randinator Bobandnator Randy Platt again charged his Platt-Num #187 into the front, looking for that elusive 2012 Feature win. However, again he started having problems, as the hip bar broke (in a Galletta's Kart, the left hip rests on a padded bar that allows you to control the feel if the kart. When it breaks, you are holding on for dear life... and it is quite a hard workout to hold onto a kart going 50mph for 30 laps. This allowed Eric Woolworth to stay within shouting distance and give Randy a run for the money. Not that we have money. Just a saying.

Here is a great battle late in the race between Chris Stevens (outside in his Chrusher.com #74), Joe Sereno (middle in the Galletta's Greenhouse #5), and Matt Stevens (in his wife's #80) on the inside. Chris lost this encounter, as Matt and Joe pinched him into the brush at the end of the back stretch, where he hit something hard enough to bend his sprocket. He then hopped back into the Galletta's #4 for the rest of the race.

Randy took it by over a kart legth despite his hip bar problems, but behind him the battles were competitive and fun to watch (and race in). Close finish for 4th here. In fact, too close to call, even after viewing slow motion replays and freeze-frames on the tape. To some, it looked like Brian got Matt, but Matt insisted he thought he got him. It's just too close to call. We awarded it a tie between Brian Galletta and Matt Stevens. I believe Matt has more ties than every other competitor in our history combined, as he always goes for that last-lap slingshot almost every finish.

John J. Galletta Memorial KartwayGalletta's Backyard Go-Kart Speedway is a free-to-race-on and free-to-watch 0.133887 mile dirt oval with 20-degree banked turns. It is located behind Galletta's Greenhouse in Oswego, NY, and can be seen from outer space! The single-wheel-drive gasoline-fueled flathead motor karts take the track between 15-17 seconds per lap which averages over 30 mph (approximately 45-50 mph top speed in the straights). Our speeds are comparable to alcohol/methanol-fueled karts that cost 8 times as much because we use mostly homemade or rebuilt go-karts and gas on a large track; leading to more karts, more competition, and more fun. Our class is usually the largest and most competitive in the area. Thanks to Google Earth for this Spring 2006 photo. Our karting club's home track is located in back of:
