GALLETTA'S KARTWAY GAS STOCKER KARTING 2008 RACE #2
~ June 15th, 2008 Race at John J. Galletta Memorial Kartway ~
The Galletta's Karting Club Speedway 2008 saw an exciting 11-kart and 50-lap race! "THE 2008 FATHER'S DAY 50" was won by defending track champion Matt Stevens in his Team Galletta's #33, who was hard pressed to fight off a swarming Chris Stevens (Galletta's #4) and just barely did so. A couple of controversial wrecks in addition to a huge pileup plagued the race. The heats were won by John Stepien (Galletta's #0), and Ryan Coleman (Galletta's #7).
The Galletta's Kart Club 2008 Volume #5:
This disc contains the complete Oswego Kartway show from Thursday, June 5th and June 12th, 2008. Disc has all karting classes AND the second week of the Galletta's Karting Club Speedway's season (Sunday, June 15th, 2008) as an added bonus. Nearly 3 hours total on two discs. Price $6.
Heat #1 saw John Stepien take the checker (in the Galletta's #0) over Dick Dann (Dann #86), Buddy Cottom (Galletta's #6), Chris Stevens (Galletta's #8), and Mike "MC Howell (Galletta's #5) who had a flat tire for almost the entire race from a 1st lap brushing with Buddy.
Heat #2 went to Flyin' Ryan Coleman (Galletta's #7), followed by Matt Stevens (Galletta's #33), Gary Miller (Miller #24), Melissa Gabel (Galletta's #3), and Nick Dann (Dann #68) got a DNF due to losing another chain. Russ Hockey (Hockey #00) was counted as scratch as he was late arriving.
Using the Galletta's handicap inverted points/wins system created by Matt and Chris Stevens, John Stepien (#0) started on the pole followed by Nick Dann (#68), Buddy Cottom (#6), Mike "MC" Howell (#5), Melissa Gabel (#3), Gary Miller (#24), Dick Dann (#86), Ryan Coleman (#7), Chris Stevens (#8), Matt Stevens (#33). Not in picture was Russ Hockey (Hockey #00), who arrived late due to a Father's Day party.
As with any full-moon race, the action was close, but wreck-filled. Early on, Buddy and Nick tangled together and Dick also got dragged in.
On the very next restart, John Stepien and Dick Dann entangled and caused a massive pileup. The wreck damaged Chris Stevens' Galletta's #8 and Nick Dann's #68 (look at his left front tire!) too much to continue. Matt also sustained damage, but as Chris and Mike "MC" Howell determined the restart order via video replay, Matt was able to repair the #33. Chris hopped into the Galletta's #4 and Nick hopped into the #24 after later in the race, Gary retired when his kart had steering problems after he got collected in another accident (not seen). This season, all regular season backup-kart hops will be penalized -5 points.
The next controversial accident came when Russ Hockey was trying to get a lap back (He was down 12 because of his late arrival) when the #00 followed Matt Stevens by former race leader Ryan Coleman. Ryan and Mike Howell then touched wheels and each went for a wild ride, both doing a 360 into some brushes. MC's was out for the night when the entire right rear tire tore off the #5, and Ryan was out with a busted gas tank and oil cap on the #7. Some tempers flared due to whose fault was the accident, but it was just determined to be a racing deal and nobody was truly at fault. To avoid further arguments from lapped guys trying to get laps back, all drivers a lap down can get a lap back when they survive a pileup and be placed in the back of the field.
When the race resumed, crafty Matt Stevens took the lead and John n Stepien held 2nd for many laps until the #0 lost control and brought out a caution. This set up a furious battle between the originators and masters of clockwise gas stocker karting, brothers Matt and Chris Stevens. Chris was all over Matt and pressuring him for the remainder of the race, but Matt was able to hold off his brother to take the first two features of the '08 Galletta's racing season.
