Galletta's Greenhouse Karting Club, located in Oswego, NY, is a go-kart racing club that specializes on racing as professionally as we can for as economically as possible. In the early 1990s, we developed a style of kart racing that is different, but no less competitive than any national karting organization. Our biggest difference is affordability. Our club is free to join and race in, and the only thing anybody pays for is gas and parts. We are the largest and longest-running dirt karting class in the local area, as we were founded in the early 1990s and our average feature is 45-Laps usually consisting of 10-15 karts, with a 200-Lap "Klassic" Championship at Summer's end deciding an Annual Points Champion. We race homemade 1-Wheel-Drive racing karts that can race on professional karting tracks and backyard speedways alike. We have karts rebuilt from used racing chassis, used yard karts and some built from scratch. We have ONE class to ensure a true overall track champion, and not have several smaller classes of divisional champions with no clear winner. We race used 5hp Briggs Flathead motors fueled by pump gas, sped-up by hand-shaved heads and select racing cams, and regulated by stock Fun Power-type carburetors instead of expensive prefabricated 2-WD chassis powered by high-priced methanol-fueled motors. On our own backyard oval speedway, we turn clockwise with our top speeds approximately 45-50MPH. Although we all run in the same division, in addition to a minimum weight requirement, we have something unique to our inclusive class -- a weight-to-power-allowance scale to allow heavier drivers more horsepower via stronger racing cams and more powerful gear ratios, a system proven to be successful as we have the tightest competition and most varied winner's circle locally over the last few years. This way our one class is bigger than the higher-priced karting classes, because heavier and lighter drivers can race equally and having the same chance of winning as the next guy. Racing experience, starting position, and a little bit of luck usually decides the outcome, and money and kart price play no role. To ensure this, we have an expert motor builder -- club co-founder Matt Stevens - who oversees that all of the motors are legal, equalized, and competitive, and does so for no cost - just to have people to race with! Join us and find out what many people, including semi-pro drivers from local racetracks say - we have the most fun and spend the least money of likely any competitive motorsport class in the world! The club races every Sunday afternoon all summer starting on the first Sunday in June annually in back of Galletta's Greenhouse and running every weekend until the weather stops us in the Fall. We race qualifiers and a 45-Lap feature most weeks, but change up to occasional Twin-30s or the occasional 55-Lapper. All races count for points and are tallied at the end of each season to determine the track champion. The season concludes with the 200-Lap Galletta's Karting Klassic in late-September or early-October. Our club is free to watch and free to join, and runs 100% off donations of the racers. You can race a Galletta's Team Kart for a nominal gas & parts donation, or race your own. We will help you either way, whether it be using a Galletta-kart or building one for yourself. We're not in this to make money and we're not in it to further a career in racing. We are in this to have fun racing with friends and family and be mini-superstars on our lil' website for as little money as humanly possible. And can your $1,000-$7,000 methanol racing kart go over 20 miles reaching speeds between 30-50MPH per lap in one race on one tank of pump gas? No? Well, we can. Join us! Enjoy the site!

6/23/2012: The Brian Almost Had It 50 60 Lapper?!

Father's Day 2012 45-LapperSATURDAY, JUNE 23rd, 2012: That gosh darn it all to heck Matty-Joey. Already he is a class above all Oswego area karters (yes, that includes the other tracks) with his experience and win totals (racing more years that some local racers have been alive, more years than other tracks have been open, and having more wins than countless of the other leading racers combined have), and many have been hard-earned/"damn-it-he's-good" wins, but he wins some where he just doesn't really deserve them as much as another driver... they just fall into his lap anyway! This was another one. Brian Galletta deserved to win this one. He has raced for years - being one of the original members of the club that his cousins founded - with only one regular feature win to his credit (that happened so long ago--2004--most of us forgot about it, including himself, and a second "All-Galletta" race where it was technically a rookie race where he was the only experienced driver on the track at the time). He had been fast in prior Klassics. And tonight, he led fifty four of the first fifty-six laps, and at times pulled away from the pack. But then here comes Matt. Now keep in mind, Matt hears the rumors that some people actually have the gall to believe that Matt's karts are just better than the rest and he rigs it. When he hears this, he gets pretty peeved off considering that he often spends more money on and more time repairing everyone else's karts (usually they are slow, and he helps speed them up for them! Yes, that's right... he helps speed up his competition!) and often neglects his own (like in the opener, he gassed visitor's karts while his own was not gassed since last year and he ran out of gas in the lead!). So, he likes to prove naysayers wrong and hops into a kart that everyone else says sucks and can't win. Something that Kyle Reuter also has done - and almost did it twice. Then he proceeds to smoke them in said kart. Oops, Matt did it again, and it's far from the first time (we lost track). Here is the tale...

50-Lap Feature for Week Three:

Adam Lytle (Lytle #33c) {NR} leads the 13-kart field away at Galletta's!

The race was originally scheduled for Sunday June 24th, but due to Timmy's daughter's high school graduation party (Congrats, Morgan!), we moved the race up a day. Per usual, all regular feature starts at Galletta's are handicapped via (1) inverted wins, (2) inverted points-per-race, with inexperienced rookies in the back until they qualify via enough green flag laps (and ones where they hold a good, safe, competitive groove) to run up front.

Brian Galletta storms by Adam Lytle for the lead on lap two! Shortly after this, Justin Galletta, who started 3rd and looked to be the fastest kart on track last week, dropped to the rear with a sputtering motor. Apparently, the choke lever was accidentally hit during the start-up and not noticed until the green flag dropped. This leaves all kinds of room for conspiracy theories to be alledged. Hmmm....

Now, all kidding aside, when inspected, the carb indeed get clogged, and we joke because the last time after someone was wicked fast, then had a carb clog, accused us of a conspiracy and never came back... (waaah waah, amazing his nickname turns so easily from "flyin'" to "cryin'" like Buddy said!)

Brian Galletta was smoking! The field that is! He was pulling away from (2nd) Chris Stevens, (3rd) Tim Galletta and (4th) Matt Stevens. But he then started slowing down once he realized that Chris and Matt (who slipped by Tim - slowed by a leaking head gasket) were starting to challenge him. This set up a tremendous triangle of racing for the lead between three of the original members of the club!

But he then started slowing down once he realized that Chris and Matt (who slipped by Tim - slowed by a leaking head gasket) were starting to challenge him. This set up a tremendous triangle of racing for the lead between three of the original members of the club! Jared Halstead (Tim's brother-in-law from Ohio in only his 3rd feature race - he won his 2nd feature two years ago this week!) even snuck up and challenged the trio in stunning fashion on one occasion, but spun out.

The race was supposed to be 50 laps. Flagger Wesley James Trogre Stevens wound up giving us an additioanl TEN laps, much like last year's Klassic went more laps than it was supposed to, too. This was basically the battle for most of the time from laps fifteen through fifty-three, with Chris and Matt side-by-side trading places and ducking down under Brian. Brian held them off in exciting, wheel-to-wheel action! This was until a restart on lap fifty-four, when Brian, who knew his #28 was sputtering, started to realize he needed that checkered to fall soon or else the kart was not going to keep the pace needed to hold on to the win, and several times exclaimed "F***!" On that restart, the kart didn't make it... and he dropped to the rear on the backstretch. When this happened, a lot of tire brushing happened on the back stretch and a small pileup happened in turn 4, and Brian's drive tire popped. Chris even lost two spots during the ordeal, and managed to gain them back on a restart, but Matt had the win sealed.

When Brian brought out the caution with a slowing kart, one of the drivers crunched into his drivewheel tire, putting a decent size puncture in it. Poor Brian with nothing but bad luck after a promising performance. It'll turn around soon enough..

Poor Brian Galletta - drive tire popped to add insult to the injury of losing with a few laps to go!

John J. Galletta Memorial KartwayGalletta's Backyard Go-Kart Speedway is a free-to-race-on and free-to-watch 0.133887 mile dirt oval with 20-degree banked turns. It is located behind Galletta's Greenhouse in Oswego, NY, and can be seen from outer space! The single-wheel-drive gasoline-fueled flathead motor karts take the track between 15-17 seconds per lap which averages over 30 mph (approximately 45-50 mph top speed in the straights). Our speeds are comparable to alcohol/methanol-fueled karts that cost 8 times as much because we use mostly homemade or rebuilt go-karts and gas on a large track; leading to more karts, more competition, and more fun. Our class is usually the largest and most competitive in the area. Thanks to Google Earth for this Spring 2006 photo. Our karting club's home track is located in back of:
