Galletta's Greenhouse Karting Club, located in Oswego, NY, is a go-kart racing club that specializes on racing as professionally as we can for as economically as possible. In the early 1990s, we developed a style of kart racing that is different, but no less competitive than any national karting organization. Our biggest difference is affordability. Our club is free to join and race in, and the only thing anybody pays for is gas and parts. We are the largest and longest-running dirt karting class in the local area, as we were founded in the early 1990s and our average feature is 45-Laps usually consisting of 10-15 karts, with a 200-Lap "Klassic" Championship at Summer's end deciding an Annual Points Champion. We race homemade 1-Wheel-Drive racing karts that can race on professional karting tracks and backyard speedways alike. We have karts rebuilt from used racing chassis, used yard karts and some built from scratch. We have ONE class to ensure a true overall track champion, and not have several smaller classes of divisional champions with no clear winner. We race used 5hp Briggs Flathead motors fueled by pump gas, sped-up by hand-shaved heads and select racing cams, and regulated by stock Fun Power-type carburetors instead of expensive prefabricated 2-WD chassis powered by high-priced methanol-fueled motors. On our own backyard oval speedway, we turn clockwise with our top speeds approximately 45-50MPH. Although we all run in the same division, in addition to a minimum weight requirement, we have something unique to our inclusive class -- a weight-to-power-allowance scale to allow heavier drivers more horsepower via stronger racing cams and more powerful gear ratios, a system proven to be successful as we have the tightest competition and most varied winner's circle locally over the last few years. This way our one class is bigger than the higher-priced karting classes, because heavier and lighter drivers can race equally and having the same chance of winning as the next guy. Racing experience, starting position, and a little bit of luck usually decides the outcome, and money and kart price play no role. To ensure this, we have an expert motor builder -- club co-founder Matt Stevens - who oversees that all of the motors are legal, equalized, and competitive, and does so for no cost - just to have people to race with! Join us and find out what many people, including semi-pro drivers from local racetracks say - we have the most fun and spend the least money of likely any competitive motorsport class in the world! The club races every Sunday afternoon all summer starting on the first Sunday in June annually in back of Galletta's Greenhouse and running every weekend until the weather stops us in the Fall. We race qualifiers and a 45-Lap feature most weeks, but change up to occasional Twin-30s or the occasional 55-Lapper. All races count for points and are tallied at the end of each season to determine the track champion. The season concludes with the 200-Lap Galletta's Karting Klassic in late-September or early-October. Our club is free to watch and free to join, and runs 100% off donations of the racers. You can race a Galletta's Team Kart for a nominal gas & parts donation, or race your own. We will help you either way, whether it be using a Galletta-kart or building one for yourself. We're not in this to make money and we're not in it to further a career in racing. We are in this to have fun racing with friends and family and be mini-superstars on our lil' website for as little money as humanly possible. And can your $1,000-$7,000 methanol racing kart go over 20 miles reaching speeds between 30-50MPH per lap in one race on one tank of pump gas? No? Well, we can. Join us! Enjoy the site!

8/22/2011: Monday Night Return of Randy Twin-30s!

Randy Platt & Tim Galletta won the "Bobandi's Back Twin 30s"!

The Return of Randy Bobandi Twin 30s.The Return of Randy Bobandi Twin 30s.MONDAY, AUGUST 22nd, 2011: With the regularly scheduled Sunday the 21st getting a washout, our race was moved to Monday the 22nd. Randy "The Bobandi" Platt made his triumphant return from his self-imposed half-summer hiatus to promptly win his first race back relatively unchallenged, taking his first feature win of 2011. The 2nd 30-Lapper saw Chris Stevens lead the first 27 laps only to break a throttle cable, and Tim Galletta took care of the final three en route to his 2nd win of 2011. The track was smooth and fast, and passes were at a premium. In a show of how fast and equal these karts are, the Galletta's #2 has sat idle for most of the season without a pilot, until Randy took it to victory lane just like he did last year. It is no lie, but it seems as if some people don't believe it when we say we have 14 race-ready/feature-winning/arrive-and-drive karts on site, many of which are free to drive, open to anybody who donates for gas/parts, and a good, experienced driver can win in each and any one of them on any given race. And, we can help you build your own potent/feature-winning kart as well for bottom dollar. It is proven and proven again and again, yet some weeks we don't have driver butts in the kart seats. Fortunately, this week was not amongst them, as we had 8 karts on the track... but do the math - that means there were several still sitting idle. Get out and race, people! Our 200-Lapper is coming soon, and you want to be seasoned for that one! Anybody can win, but you have to work at learning the track and the karts to do so. Join us today! Videos coming when done and race results are up here! Now let's review the race:

8 kart show tonight! Not bad for a Monday raindate! And Bobandi's finally back after taking a chunk of the season off due to personal reasons. Lo and behold, he's point-handicapped on the pole!

With the rain-outs, our back-turn angle has been under-covered due to our usual cameraman Gene Galletta not attending any of the raindate races. Here a stationary shot still took a decent angle of the action.

The track was fast all night. Even Matt, who usually picks people off when the track is a bit sub-par, had difficulty getting a pass. Then again, the Matt-Stopper, Chris, was holding him off, which saved others from what he calls "the torture rack" of moves he throws at people. Chris has seen them all, and can take the challenges better than anybody, but with the races close and so thin competitor-wise, Matt has been getting by everyone by capitalizing on one slow kart or one bad bump.

On a mid-race restart, Justin Galletta took the #7 under Randy's #2, but Boban-the-man held him off on the quicker outside lane.

On a mid-race restart, Justin Galletta took the #7 under Randy's #2, but Boban-the-man held him off on the quicker angle of the outside lane.

Here Tim Galletta (#54), Chris Stevens (#4), and Matt Stevens (#33) each try to advance a position by trapping the other in traffic.

When a 1st-time rookie is out there, it will always take time for them to get up to speed. In the meantime, until they learn the track and karts, new guys (and girls) do provide passing opportunities when they are lapped. Here Tim Galletta (#54), Chris Stevens (#4), and Matt Stevens (#33) each try to advance a position by trapping the other in traffic.

Matt almost snuck under the rookie Hal, but couldn't find the room, sparing both Tim and Chris from potentially losing positions

One such opportunity occured on the last lap of feature 1, when Matt almost snuck under the rookie Hal, but couldn't find the room, sparing both Tim and Chris from potentially losing positions. The usual unstoppable karting terror known as Go-Kart Mozart Master Matt only wound up passing his wife Melissa in the first show, and Randy Platt took all 30 laps (and their bonus points) for the grand-slam win.

Final Order of Finish:

  1. Randy Platt (Galletta's Greenhouse #2) [1 win, son!]
  2. Justin Galletta (Galletta's Greenhouse #7) [1 win]
  3. Joe Sereno (Galletta's Greenhouse #5) {R} [1 win]
  4. Tim Galletta (Galletta #54) [1 win]
  5. Chris Stevens (Galletta's Greenhouse #4) [1 win]
  6. Matt Stevens (Galletta's Greenhouse #33)  [6 wins]

30-LAP FEATURE #2:

As most readers know, we handicap our races via inverting the wins and points. However, for the 2nd of a Twin-30, we don't have time to tally the points between races, and we have traditionally invert the finish of the 1st. However, after the last Twin-30s when Matt finished last in the 1st and then utterly blew away the feature via starting on the pole, we went back to our system that we set up late last year, where we still invert, but more wins still must be handicapped in the back to prevent another case of someone with as many points and wins as Matt to start on the pole. This set up a very dynamic field, with one exception... now Chris - who although has won the last two track championships despite only winning 3 features in the last 3 years - starts up front!

Starting Lineup:

  1. Hal Borland (Galletta's Greenhouse #6) {NR}
  2. Chris Stevens (Galletta's Greenhouse #4) [1 win]
  3. Tim Galletta (Galletta #54) [1 win]
  4. Joe Sereno (Galletta's Greenhouse #5) {R} [1 win]
  5. Justin Galletta (Galletta's Greenhouse #7) [1 win]
  6. Randy Platt (Galletta's Greenhouse #2) [1 win]
  7. Melissa Stevens (Scissors N Fur #80)  [2 wins]
  8. Matt Stevens (Galletta's Greenhouse #3)  [6 wins]

    {NR} = Newbie / Inexperienced Rookie
    {R} = 1st Season / Experienced Rookie

Chris Stevens took the lead on the initial start and held the lead for the first twenty-six laps. Tim Galletta and Joe Sereno were able to stay close to the #4, but neither were able to mount a challenge.

Chris Stevens took the lead on the initial start and held the lead for the 1st 26 laps until his throttle cable snapped, allowing Tim Galletta the lead with 4 to go.

However, with the 26th curcuit nearly complete, with Chris holding a steady lead, the throttle cable snapped on the Galletta's #4, again preventing Chris from getting only his 4th win in the past calendar 3 years. He hopped into the #8 (again, a -5 point penalty is charged for any mid-race kart change).

Timmy Galletta finished the final four laps to take his 2nd feature of 2011.

Timmy Galletta finished the final four laps to take his 2nd feature of 2011. He was followed by his son Justin in the #7, who under the radar snuck in two impressive 2nd place finishes tonight!

Final Order Of Finish:

  1. Tim Galletta (Galletta #54) [2 wins!]
  2. Justin Galletta (Galletta's Greenhouse #7) [1 win]
  3. Randy Platt (Galletta's Greenhouse #2) [1 win]
  4. Matt Stevens (Galletta's Greenhouse #3)  [6 wins]
  5. Chris Stevens (Galletta's Greenhouse #4, #8) [1 win]
  6. Joe Sereno (Galletta's Greenhouse #5) {R} [1 win]
  7. Melissa Stevens (Scissors N Fur #80)  [2 wins]
  8. Hal Borland (Galletta's Greenhouse #6) {NR}

    {NR} = Newbie / Inexperienced Rookie
    {R} = 1st Season / Experienced Rookie
    [DNF] = Did Not Finish
    2nd Kart in same race = -5 pt. penalty

Next race should be Sunday unless the weather prevents us. As usual, we may run a rain date on an early weekday if enough racers are available for it, including a majority of regular drivers (drivers racing in at least 75% of the races held this season).

John J. Galletta Memorial KartwayGalletta's Backyard Go-Kart Speedway is a free-to-race-on and free-to-watch 0.133887 mile dirt oval with 20-degree banked turns. It is located behind Galletta's Greenhouse in Oswego, NY, and can be seen from outer space! The single-wheel-drive gasoline-fueled flathead motor karts take the track between 15-17 seconds per lap which averages over 30 mph (approximately 45-50 mph top speed in the straights). Our speeds are comparable to alcohol/methanol-fueled karts that cost 8 times as much because we use mostly homemade or rebuilt go-karts and gas on a large track; leading to more karts, more competition, and more fun. Our class is usually the largest and most competitive in the area. Thanks to Google Earth for this Spring 2006 photo. Our karting club's home track is located in back of:
