Galletta's Greenhouse Karting Club, located in Oswego, NY, is a go-kart racing club that specializes on racing as professionally as we can for as economically as possible. In the early 1990s, we developed a style of kart racing that is different, but no less competitive than any national karting organization. Our biggest difference is affordability. Our club is free to join and race in, and the only thing anybody pays for is gas and parts. We are the largest and longest-running dirt karting class in the local area, as we were founded in the early 1990s and our average feature is 45-Laps usually consisting of 10-15 karts, with a 200-Lap "Klassic" Championship at Summer's end deciding an Annual Points Champion. We race homemade 1-Wheel-Drive racing karts that can race on professional karting tracks and backyard speedways alike. We have karts rebuilt from used racing chassis, used yard karts and some built from scratch. We have ONE class to ensure a true overall track champion, and not have several smaller classes of divisional champions with no clear winner. We race used 5hp Briggs Flathead motors fueled by pump gas, sped-up by hand-shaved heads and select racing cams, and regulated by stock Fun Power-type carburetors instead of expensive prefabricated 2-WD chassis powered by high-priced methanol-fueled motors. On our own backyard oval speedway, we turn clockwise with our top speeds approximately 45-50MPH. Although we all run in the same division, in addition to a minimum weight requirement, we have something unique to our inclusive class -- a weight-to-power-allowance scale to allow heavier drivers more horsepower via stronger racing cams and more powerful gear ratios, a system proven to be successful as we have the tightest competition and most varied winner's circle locally over the last few years. This way our one class is bigger than the higher-priced karting classes, because heavier and lighter drivers can race equally and having the same chance of winning as the next guy. Racing experience, starting position, and a little bit of luck usually decides the outcome, and money and kart price play no role. To ensure this, we have an expert motor builder -- club co-founder Matt Stevens - who oversees that all of the motors are legal, equalized, and competitive, and does so for no cost - just to have people to race with! Join us and find out what many people, including semi-pro drivers from local racetracks say - we have the most fun and spend the least money of likely any competitive motorsport class in the world! The club races every Sunday afternoon all summer starting on the first Sunday in June annually in back of Galletta's Greenhouse and running every weekend until the weather stops us in the Fall. We race qualifiers and a 45-Lap feature most weeks, but change up to occasional Twin-30s or the occasional 55-Lapper. All races count for points and are tallied at the end of each season to determine the track champion. The season concludes with the 200-Lap Galletta's Karting Klassic in late-September or early-October. Our club is free to watch and free to join, and runs 100% off donations of the racers. You can race a Galletta's Team Kart for a nominal gas & parts donation, or race your own. We will help you either way, whether it be using a Galletta-kart or building one for yourself. We're not in this to make money and we're not in it to further a career in racing. We are in this to have fun racing with friends and family and be mini-superstars on our lil' website for as little money as humanly possible. And can your $1,000-$7,000 methanol racing kart go over 20 miles reaching speeds between 30-50MPH per lap in one race on one tank of pump gas? No? Well, we can. Join us! Enjoy the site!

8/5/2011: Special Friday "10,000-Rocks-To-Win" 60-Lap Night!

Jeff Tetro and Matt Stevens win the Friday 8/5/2011 Twin 30s

8/5/2011 - Friday Night Twin 30s8/5/2011 - Friday Twin-30s NightAUGUST 5th, 2011: A Special Friday Night event took place at Galletta's Greenhouse Backyard Karting Speedway saw another 60-lap race night. Yep, that's right, sixty 15-17 second green flag laps for one division. Jeff Tetro took the 1st feature, again holding off Matt by a nose at the stripe like he did a few weeks ago, but Matt roared back to take the 2nd 30-lapper after the track developed bumps in turn 2 and Matt survived to take his 5th of the season.

OUR ANNUAL 10,000-ROCKS-TO-WIN!:

Every year at this general time, as Oswego Speedway holds their $10,000-to-Win / Mr. Supermodified race, we hold the same. Er, kinda'. I mean, we grew up watching Supers at Oswego Speedway and designed our track and karts in the early 1990s to be a small microcosm of our favorite race track and motorsport (except on dirt, and with 1-WD racing karts that corner better going right than any standard 2-WD racing kart can going left). Problem... we don't have a spare $10,000. If we did, our track would no longer be a backyard speedway, but a pretty sweet karting facility and the karts would get some upgrades as well. Maybe even asphalt. But we're just a for-fun racing club, run and raced by friends and family. So, with our humble, backyard racing budget (we operate 100% on donations and charge no money for people to watch or run a kart), we wondered what we have 10,000 of to give away. Rocks that one can pick from the track! So, the winner wins 'em! Except no winner ever picks them. Oh, well!

8/5/2011 10,000 to win karting race at Galletta's in Oswego, NY

As usual, regular features start handicapped via our point formula. Drivers are inverted by (a) wins and (b) points-per-race average. It usually sets up the best possible racing, so it's a formula that we are proud of. Some craziness before the race as the Galletta's #1 throttle cable wasn't working, which led to Brian Galletta instead driving the #7, a kart he is somewhat less comfortable in. Justin Galletta couldn't make it and missed his 1st race of the year. But this is the reason why we have Retcon Makeup Races. It helps the driver who misses a race or two stay in the point standings.

Starting Lineup:

    1. Brian Galletta (Galletta's Greenhouse #7)
    2. Jeff Tetro (Galletta's Greenhouse #9)  [1 win]
    3. Joe Sereno (Galletta's Greenhouse #5) {R}  [1 win]
    4. Tim Galletta (Galletta #54) [1 win]
    5. Chris Stevens (Galletta's Greenhouse #8) [1 win]
    6. Melissa Stevens (Scissors N Fur #80)  [2 wins]
    7. Matt Stevens (Galletta's Greenhouse #3)  [4 wins]

8/5/2011 10,000 to win karting race at Galletta's in Oswego, NY

Opening lap saw Jeff Tetro (#9) catch Brian Galletta (#7) snoozing and stole the lead before they even hit the start/finish line. The leader sets the pace (preferably not full speed, maybe 40-50% or so), and the green drops when the leader passes the two orange cones in turn 4. Drivers must stay in line until those cones are passes, then passing is legal.

8/5/2011 10,000 to win karting race at Galletta's in Oswego, NY

Tetro again started slowly crawling away from the pack much like he did a couple weeks earlier, which was bumper to bumper with Matt (#3) doing his patented low-groove stunts trying to make his way to the front.

8/5/2011 10,000 to win karting race at Galletta's in Oswego, NY

Tim Galletta (#54) tried to get under Joe Sereno (#5) and when Joe held him off, Chris Stevens (#8) and Matt Stevens were able to get by.

8/5/2011 10,000 to win karting race at Galletta's in Oswego, NY

Shortly after this, the #54 blew a drive tire, which forced Tim into the #6 for the rest of the 1st feature. Brian Galletta held everyone off until a few laps to go, when Matt was able to sneak under him and take another shot at Jeff.

8/5/2011 10,000 to win karting race at Galletta's in Oswego, NY

In a near-repeat of the 7/24/2011 race a couple weeks earlier where they had a near-tie, Jeff again held Matt off, but this time by roughly half a kart length. Behind them, Chris Stevens pulled alongside Brian Galletta, but Brian held Chris off in the same manner.

Final Order Of Finish:Jeff Tetro wins the 1st of 2 30-Lap Features at Galletta's Greenhouse Backyard Speedway on 8/5/2011

  1. Jeff Tetro (Galletta's Greenhouse #9)  [2 wins]

2nd TWIN 30:

Starting Lineup:

  1. Joe Sereno (Galletta's Greenhouse #5) {R} [1 win]
  2. Melissa Stevens (Scissors N Fur #80)  [2 wins]
  3. Tim Galletta (Galletta #54) [1 win]
  4. Chris Stevens (Galletta's Greenhouse #4) [1 win]
  5. Brian Galletta (Galletta's Greenhouse #7)
  6. Matt Stevens (Galletta's Greenhouse #33)  [4 wins]
  7. Jeff Tetro (Galletta's Greenhouse #9)  [2 wins]

    {R} = 1st Season Rookie

As our usual twin-features go, the start of the 2nd is inverted from the finish from the 1st. This put Joe Sereno (#5) on the pole. Joe was pulling away and saying bye bye to the rest of the field in the early going, but got too high coming out of two and walloped the outside retaining tire, seriously bending up the front end steering rods on the #5 and forcing him to race the #2.

8/5/2011 10,000 to win karting race at Galletta's in Oswego, NY

This set up last week's winner Melissa Stevens (#80) in the lead, and although she doesn't do very many passes, Melissa herself is always a tough pass. Also, keep in mind that although the #80 has traditionally been an ill-handling kart since it was first built, Matt drove it the week before and worked on it to get it up to par, something he always does with all of the Galletta's Go-Karts. This is one reason why we are so close every single week, every single year, and closer now than ever before.

8/5/2011 10,000 to win karting race at Galletta's in Oswego, NY

The track was unfortunately getting pretty rough in turn 2 during the 2nd feature, and seemingly worse every lap. The ruts stretched from the very top groove to the middle of the track, blocking the quickest two or three lines on the track. The bumps took their toll on the karts, and Melissa's #80 bent an axle on them after lap 21 which surrendered the lead to Tim Galletta (#54), and since Matt (#33) nipped Chris (#4) at the line on the last completed lap, it set Matt up on Tim's bumper. This set up Matt Stevens (#33) for his mastery of the low-groove, and he blew by a bump-slowed #54 to take off for yet another feature win. Darn that tricky lil' Matt!

Final Order Of Finish:

  1. Matt Stevens (Galletta's Greenhouse #33)  [5 wins]
  2. Tim Galletta (Galletta #54) [1 win]
  3. Chris Stevens (Galletta's Greenhouse #4) [1 win]
  4. Brian Galletta (Galletta's Greenhouse #7)
  5. Jeff Tetro (Galletta's Greenhouse #9)  [2 wins]
  6. Melissa Stevens (Scissors N Fur #80, 19)  [2 wins]
  7. Joe Sereno (Galletta's Greenhouse #5, 2) {R} [1 win]

Too bad about the bumps in the 2nd feature. A shame because 3/4th's of the track was nearly perfect, especially the back turns and both straights. But one bad turn messes everything up, and Matt has some track work to do this week - helpers, as usual, are always welcome. (Sunday update: Track has been dragged and rolled and looks amazing!)

Matt slowly creeps away, but he isn't too far gone. If we had more good drivers on track in addition to the very good ones that we already have, the chances of holding him back are greater. Meanwhile, 2nd through 6th has been tight all year, although Justin's absence this week has put him in a little bit of a deficit. A make-up race should put him back in it. On a side note, this season has been an exceedingly small one (in terms of driver volume). Between a couple of drivers retiring from full-time racing due to age/health issues, one driver quitting because he is a penniless backstabber, two regular drivers quitting because they believed an irrational gossip, a few bought karts and never raced with us one (which makes absolutely zero sense whatsoever), and a few who used to race with us decided to race the more pricey 2-WD classes on other local tracks (which is ok in our book) and not race with us at all anymore (kind of backstabbyish). This means that only 13 drivers have competed thus far in 2011, probably our smallest active roster in the past 7-10 years. Let's get more people out already! We have 14 karts and only 6-10 weekly drivers? Let's go, people!

John J. Galletta Memorial KartwayGalletta's Backyard Go-Kart Speedway is a free-to-race-on and free-to-watch 0.133887 mile dirt oval with 20-degree banked turns. It is located behind Galletta's Greenhouse in Oswego, NY, and can be seen from outer space! The single-wheel-drive gasoline-fueled flathead motor karts take the track between 15-17 seconds per lap which averages over 30 mph (approximately 45-50 mph top speed in the straights). Our speeds are comparable to alcohol/methanol-fueled karts that cost 8 times as much because we use mostly homemade or rebuilt go-karts and gas on a large track; leading to more karts, more competition, and more fun. Our class is usually the largest and most competitive in the area. Thanks to Google Earth for this Spring 2006 photo. Our karting club's home track is located in back of:
