Galletta's Greenhouse Karting Club, located in Oswego, NY, is a go-kart racing club that specializes on racing as professionally as we can for as economically as possible. In the early 1990s, we developed a style of kart racing that is different, but no less competitive than any national karting organization. Our biggest difference is affordability. Our club is free to join and race in, and the only thing anybody pays for is gas and parts. We are the largest and longest-running dirt karting class in the local area, as we were founded in the early 1990s and our average feature is 45-Laps usually consisting of 10-15 karts, with a 200-Lap "Klassic" Championship at Summer's end deciding an Annual Points Champion. We race homemade 1-Wheel-Drive racing karts that can race on professional karting tracks and backyard speedways alike. We have karts rebuilt from used racing chassis, used yard karts and some built from scratch. We have ONE class to ensure a true overall track champion, and not have several smaller classes of divisional champions with no clear winner. We race used 5hp Briggs Flathead motors fueled by pump gas, sped-up by hand-shaved heads and select racing cams, and regulated by stock Fun Power-type carburetors instead of expensive prefabricated 2-WD chassis powered by high-priced methanol-fueled motors. On our own backyard oval speedway, we turn clockwise with our top speeds approximately 45-50MPH. Although we all run in the same division, in addition to a minimum weight requirement, we have something unique to our inclusive class -- a weight-to-power-allowance scale to allow heavier drivers more horsepower via stronger racing cams and more powerful gear ratios, a system proven to be successful as we have the tightest competition and most varied winner's circle locally over the last few years. This way our one class is bigger than the higher-priced karting classes, because heavier and lighter drivers can race equally and having the same chance of winning as the next guy. Racing experience, starting position, and a little bit of luck usually decides the outcome, and money and kart price play no role. To ensure this, we have an expert motor builder -- club co-founder Matt Stevens - who oversees that all of the motors are legal, equalized, and competitive, and does so for no cost - just to have people to race with! Join us and find out what many people, including semi-pro drivers from local racetracks say - we have the most fun and spend the least money of likely any competitive motorsport class in the world! The club races every Sunday afternoon all summer starting on the first Sunday in June annually in back of Galletta's Greenhouse and running every weekend until the weather stops us in the Fall. We race qualifiers and a 45-Lap feature most weeks, but change up to occasional Twin-30s or the occasional 55-Lapper. All races count for points and are tallied at the end of each season to determine the track champion. The season concludes with the 200-Lap Galletta's Karting Klassic in late-September or early-October. Our club is free to watch and free to join, and runs 100% off donations of the racers. You can race a Galletta's Team Kart for a nominal gas & parts donation, or race your own. We will help you either way, whether it be using a Galletta-kart or building one for yourself. We're not in this to make money and we're not in it to further a career in racing. We are in this to have fun racing with friends and family and be mini-superstars on our lil' website for as little money as humanly possible. And can your $1,000-$7,000 methanol racing kart go over 20 miles reaching speeds between 30-50MPH per lap in one race on one tank of pump gas? No? Well, we can. Join us! Enjoy the site!

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 15th, 2012: Again holding to our mostly "Friday-or-Saturday Fall Schedule" we ran 11-Karts in a 45-Lap Feature (plus heats) and had the debut of two brand-new karts on the track for the very first time! The Brian Galletta-owned "Doggy-Style #13" and the "Seven-or-Eight-Different-Owners #78" of Eric Woolworth. Yep, Matt won again, but he wasn't his usual self of making dominant passes left and right for the win. The top three of Bill Truax, Dave Spanfelner and Chris Stevens wrecked in front of him, which dropped the win in his lap late in the race. Much like when Joe Sereno lost a front left tire to almost have his kart land in his lap, and when Brian came hot into a hot pit and had something else drop into his lap - a young human being! Whoa! More to come, son. Like or discuss on facebook here. Or... read on below!

DVD Highlight YouTube Video

YouTube video to this race is currently being produced and is forthcoming. Kinda... well, maybe not. Why? Well, due to workload, i have little to no time -- in addition to racing, doing this website (and all points, pics, videos, writedowns, and everything you see here), I also do greenhouse work (February through June) and sushi work (all 364 days a year I either help my wife make sushi or at the very least drive her back and forth to work and/or deliver sushi), all while keeping my career of a graphic novelist and cartoonist completely on the back burner, much to myself and everyone who knows me's disapproval. I love making the YouTube reels, but I have simply not had the time,a dn the program I use crashes frequently, and I have lost a handful of 70-99% completed videos - highly discouraging considering that I spend several hours spread over a few days on each. Hence, the YouTube reels are going slowly, and may be a long time coming, if at all, which is why I prefer you buy the DVDs, which are only $5 per disc and usually available the next day at earliest and the next week at latest. All picture captures & video clips are directly taken from our weekly DVDs, which are almost always available to buy the day after the race. It's best to pre-order them so I can have them ready on race day for you.

Above is this race's menu. Most of the pictures found on this website are screen captures from that race's DVD. For a DVD copy of this race, please e-mail or call Chris Stevens and ask for this week's race. Each disc is chock full of between 1 to 3 hours of racing in the highest-possible DVD resolution with Dolby Stereo 2.0 with Pro-Logic Surround Sound, predominantly from multiple angles and are only $5 each (discounts available for multiple copies or regular kart Galletta-Kart renters). We accept PayPal or cash, and can either ship or arrange for pickup.

Race Results

9/15/2012 - HEAT #1 (8-Laps/5-Drivers):

START:
Pos. | Driver (Karts driven) | 2012 Wins

    1. Billy Ruggio (Ruggio #02)
    2. Eric Woolworth (Seven-or-Eight-Owners #78)
    3. Brian Galletta (Doggy-Style #13)
    4. Joe Sereno (Galletta's Greenhouse #5)
    5. Chris Stevens (Galletta's Greenhouse/Chrusher.com #4)

Billy Ruggio held off all competitors in his #02 for his very 1st heat win. However, he celebrated too soon and almost lost, when he took both hands off the steering wheel coming towards the finish line and almost crashed into the starter tower. That would've probably lost him the race, as Chris, Brian, and Joe were nipping at his heels and probably would've all got by if he did hit the stand!

FINISH:
Pos. | Driver (Karts driven) | 2012 Wins

  1. Billy Ruggio (Ruggio #02)
  2. Chris Stevens (Galletta's Greenhouse/Chrusher.com #4)
  3. Brian Galletta (Doggy-Style #13)
  4. Joe Sereno (Galletta's Greenhouse #5)
  5. Eric Woolworth (Seven-or-Eight-Owners #78) - DNF

  4. Randy Platt (Platt-num #187)
  5. Melissa Stevens (Scissors N' Fur #19)
  6. Matt Stevens (Galletta's Greenhouse/Chrusher.com #74)

I guess if your name is Bill, you win a heat today! Billy Truax took the Galletta's #7 to a heat win. Truax is only in his first month racing at Galletta's and is already looking very good out there! (And add a note to those who only race once or twice and then never come back and think we rig it... everybody starts slowly and gets better over time. Except quitters. And checking our to-date 2012 points list below and our all-time points, you can see all the drivers with 1-4 shows who did just that). Matt again had a helmet cam and the footage is good, but again, won't be great until we race in the daytime. Last minute builds of Brian Galletta's #13 and Eric Woolworth's #78 pushed us back just enough to dusk for this heat.

9/15/2012 - MAKE-UP (RETCON) CREDITS:

Retcon races are short hot-lap sessions counted as a race and designed for two functions: For rookie drivers to get some track time seasoning before entering the regular races, and for regular racers and veterans who missed an earlier race to make-up those races that they missed, and help get back into the points race without penalizing those who did race in that event. All drivers are scored in the earliest race they missed, retroactively counted as if they were in that race. Nobody should be racing exceedingly hard in these races, and almost none of the drivers are actually racing each other and they are often counted in entirely different races.

SCORING:
Pos. | Driver (Karts driven) | 2012 Make-Up Feature Credit Earned

  • Randy Platt (Platt-num #187) - Credited 12th in both 7/8/2012 Twin-30 lap features
  • Bill Truax (Galletta's Greenhouse #7) - Credited 12th in the 7/1/2012 45-lap feature

[NR] = Newbie Rookie (Inexperienced Rookie/Novice/Beginner/1st-Timer Driver)

*Note: This one, since the season is winding down, each driver in attendence that missed a prior race was counted in one of the heats as a make-up race (the earliest race they missed).

Joey Sereno took a wild ride when the left front wheel came off. It pivoted into the ground and sent him into a tumble. He shook it off, threw on another wheel and got back out there.

Although Billy Truax (Galletta's #7) continued to show improvement and pulled away for most of the show, he started slowing down as the race progressed closer to the finish and Dave, Chris and Matt started gaining on him. Dave was holding off challenges from Chris and Matt, but when the #7 slowed badly one lap, the #81 plowed into Truax's kart in turn 2, Matt narrowly escaped in the low groove, blocking Chris, who came to a stop but tapped the bumper on the #81. Ogre decided that the tap was enough to send Chris to the rear, and if not for that, he would've inherited the lead. Even so, to add insult to injury, Wesley Stevens lack of knowledge on our own rules disobeyed that the originators of the wreck are always to go in last, and people collected are to restart in front of them (unless they have to go to the pits for a repair). Ogre placed Chris in back of everyone, which forced Chris to drive angry for the rest of the race. He did get back up to third, but not without a few close calls with some tire scrubbing through the field.

John J. Galletta Memorial KartwayGalletta's Backyard Go-Kart Speedway is a free-to-race-on and free-to-watch 0.133887 mile dirt oval with 20-degree banked turns. It is located behind Galletta's Greenhouse in Oswego, NY, and can be seen from outer space! The single-wheel-drive gasoline-fueled flathead motor karts take the track between 15-17 seconds per lap which averages over 30 mph (approximately 45-50 mph top speed in the straights). Our speeds are comparable to alcohol/methanol-fueled karts that cost 8 times as much because we use mostly homemade or rebuilt go-karts and gas on a large track; leading to more karts, more competition, and more fun. Our class is usually the largest and most competitive in the area. Thanks to Google Earth for this Spring 2006 photo. Our karting club's home track is located in back of:
