7/24/2011: Photo Finish to the 10-Kart/55-Lapper!
JULY 24TH, 2011: Every week it seems as we say, "What a great race! Close, fast, competitive and clean!" Well, we had another one, as 10 competitors battled it out during the 55-lap feature on July 24th, 2011. One of the original members of the GKC, Brian Galletta led early, challenged by Melissa Stevens and Jeff Tetro. But Tetro got the pass on a good restart and looked tough to catch until Matt Stevens worked his way to 2nd to test Jeff. They battled through lapped traffic, even splitting it 3-wide more than once. And although Matt nearly got him three of four times, Jeff snipped (or is it nipped?) Matt at the finish line for the closest finish of the year! As Russ Bartlett said, "Those last few laps were worth the price of admission!" Good show, and finally, we got to double-digits in 2011! Thanks to all who raced and congrats to Jeff!

55-LAP FEATURE EVENT:
Brian Galletta (#1) looks over to see Melissa Stevens (#19) get a great start to jump from 3rd to almost 1st as the green flag dropped.
Opening lap of our 55-lapper. You won't find better competition for a cheaper price. Because we race for free, and run on donations for gas & parts! And if you go to any pay karting facility/track in the world, you will not find better competition in classes that cost 3-10 times as much. Ours is equal or better for a fraction of the cost. If you don't believe us, come on out and try it.
Early on Melissa Stevens held 2nd while Jeff Tetro (#9) and several other competitors battled wheel-to-wheel. And despite this... NO WRECKS.
Melissa holding off Tetro during the 1st few laps, who in turn is holding off Justin Galletta (#7), Joe Sereno (#5), Tim Galletta (#54), Matt Stevens (#33), and Chris Stevens (#8).
For around half the race, the primary battle was Jeff Tetro fighting off Matt Stevens for the lead. You can see them race side-by-side for many laps, with Jeff barely holding on after a few close calls. Matt almost cleared him for a clean pass a few times, but gave Jeff enough room to battle back. You won't find any competitive racing this clean, courteous and close anywhere.
Here is the snapshot of the "photo finish"! Tetro pumps his fist in triumph as he holds that tricky karting master Matt off by literally the front bumper to secure his 1st feature win of the year, while barely blocking Matt from scoring his 5th feature win of 10 thus far in 2011 (to the sigh of relief from the rest of the competitors who are trailing Matt in the points and slipping even further behind)!

Final Order Of Finish:

Jeff's strong run (plus make-up races) has him catching the group that has been here all season. Meanwhile, as Justin and Joe flip spots every week, Tim has caught and passed Chris, and the primary reason is that Chris broke late and needed a kart change after he got Tim in traffic! That's how close the racing is, folks! One break, one position, one pass means that much! Close race thus far, except Matt is creeping away. We must unite to stop the one-man-karting crew!

Location & Sponsor
Galletta's Backyard Go-Kart Speedway is a free-to-race-on and free-to-watch 0.133887 mile dirt oval with 20-degree banked turns. It is located behind Galletta's Greenhouse in Oswego, NY, and can be seen from outer space! The single-wheel-drive gasoline-fueled flathead motor karts take the track between 15-17 seconds per lap which averages over 30 mph (approximately 45-50 mph top speed in the straights). Our speeds are comparable to alcohol/methanol-fueled karts that cost 8 times as much because we use mostly homemade or rebuilt go-karts and gas on a large track; leading to more karts, more competition, and more fun. Our class is usually the largest and most competitive in the area. Thanks to Google Earth for this Spring 2006 photo. Our karting club's home track is located in back of:
