2004 was not only the first for the brand new
Galletta's #8 (which Chris adopted), but it was the first season where
visitors started bringing their own karts in addition to regularly filling
our backup "rental" karts. This led to not only more karts on track, but
more excitement than ever with more and more guys out there who really loved
racing and didn't just go out and "crash, smash and come in last" abusing
our Galletta's team karts like so many have done in the past. The serious
drivers are what we want out there with us!
However, there was some controversy in this season.
For the first time ever, a visiting driver brought out a bigger motor: a
5.5hp Overhead Valve. The very first time out, the motor was proven to be
WAY more powerful than the box 5hp flathead karts (even with a sputtering
carburetor). It just had too much power, and nobody could really touch the
kart no matter how much experience they had. This led to a unanimous
decision by all active karters to ban the motor for the remainder of the
season after easily winning a few races. We still wanted the driver to come
back with a 5hp flathead, as he was a passionate driver like we want on our
track... but he never did. His excuse was that he was too heavy, but he was
roughly the same weight as most of the other drivers.
This season also saw our most drivers ever. However,
there was one negative to this: Many of these drivers we did not know very
well, and some competitor's names were never properly
printed and illegibly signed; hence some nicknames,
partial names, and /or initials are seen instead
of complete names. These same people also mostly...
well, "wussed
out" and never raced more than once or twice (and not
very well), so they
weren't important enough to record their complete names
and leave them anonymous anyway. }:^P But seriously, and all kidding aside,
if you know that one of these partial names is you, please send me a note
and I'll put your correct name. Also, we'd love for you to come back.
